NO MAN’S LAND

If you’re crossing the river… make sure you bring your passport and your fishing rod

THE HISTORY

Estancias in South Patagonia, which are large cattle ranches, originated from the arrival of English companies that owned vast tracts of land. These companies established “stations” to manage their estates, and this English term was eventually adopted into the Spanish language as “Estancia”. The first constructions, like those at Estancia near the ocean, date back to 1916.

While inside of the real working Estancias, one way to manage this big territory was strategically build a PUESTO, very basic house for gauchos to live in, part of the year, depending on the mission they have with sheep or cattle.

These generation of settlers and their hard work and passion for their land, has inherited big portions of valleys and historical buildings that are the perfect scenarios for the new travelers and explore unique and private areas.

Estancia San Luis and the Cárdenas-Oyarzún Family, has been dedicated to cattle ranching for decades, The big step, this family took was back in 1976, after the Chilean Government of the time, decided to reformed the agriculture law and leased the option to local worker and offer big portions of land for economic development.

Was here when Estancia San Luis lead by the head of the family Sergio Cardenas Aguilar with effort, determination, perseverance, and together with a committed work team had manage and put in Patagonia map one of the most beautiful pieces of land you would ever see.

Patagonia is influenced by the local steppe climate and the Polar current coming from the Antarctic. During the year, there is little rainfall in this part of Patagonia. The average temperature in southern Patagonia is 60’F. Wind is always a factor, and it can blow constantly. For most of the year, you can expect winds with a speed of about 15 – 20 km/h (9 – 13 miles/h). In the summer months however, winds can pick up and can reach speeds of about 80 to 100 km/h (50 to 65 miles/h).

QUINCHO AND DINING ROOM

This area is separate from the cabin, located in the Estancia headquarters.

Really a pleasure to be around the main quincho, where clients check in when they arrive, welcome drinks, dinners, barbecues and really part of the experience.

In about a one hour’s drive from the lodge we have access to more than 6 different spectacular SPRING CREEKS. These are all wading opportunities and we take all lunches and equipment with us to spend the full day in the area. Because these water options are so close together, we can move from one creek to another, so as to give you a touch of diversity on your trip.

We are very concerned about this type of water. Our SPRING CREEKS are some of the most unique trout waters in all of Patagonia.

We have a couple of main rivers in the area that we select during your stay with us. They are typically 20 to 40 feet wide, mountain and spring water fed, with well-marked pools and riffles.

We definitely suggest fishing these rivers, as they are connected straight to the ocean and it can be a surprise on every trip.

We have resident brown trout and as the season goes on, especially starting in mid-February until mid-April we find SEA RUN BROWNS that are waiting for you.
